Your Voice as Art

Filed under: Events — Stephen @ 10:20 am

Join us April 7th at Caerleon Isle for the opening of Through the Virtual Looking Glass and the premiere of the Your Voice as Art, Field of Voices. Slurl, http://slurl.com/secondlife/Caerleon%20Isle/113/85/41

Collaborators Dekka Raymaker, Misprint Thursday, Penumbra Carter, Selavy Oh, and Aequitas have encapsulated the theme of the Real life / Second Life crossover exhibition with their Networked Collaboration, Field of Voices previously mentioned in New World Notes January 21, 2010.

The idea was to illuminate the shift of perception from outside to inside the virtual world. The visitor is presented with a beautiful expanse of white columns not unlike a circuit board or a graveyard. Jumping down in to the field we are treated to the voices of a diverse group of real people belaying the sterile perception of Second Life, and social media in general by reminding us there are people behind the virtual avatar on the screen. The effect is quite touching and before you know it the visitor falls through the floor and is treated to a soothing light show as they walk through the amusing, touching, and clever proximity activated voices in the poles.

This is all part of Virtual Art Initiative and the the RL/SL crossover exhibition Through the Virtual Looking Glass opening April 7th in five real world galleries and other spaces in as many countries, specifically, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, and the United States.

Australia will also participate in the April events virtually, while hosting a real world exhibition at a time later this year.

Organizers of the exhibition in each country will choose its content and methods of display which will include interactive artworks from the virtual worlds Second Life and OpenSim, images and machinimas (virtual world videos) shown on plasma screens and digital frames, prints of virtual artworks, physical sculptures and paintings inspired by virtual art, some with embedded electronic components, and literary readings and musical performances occurring in the real world exhibition spaces and streamed live into Second Life and OpenSim.

Through the Virtual Looking Glass is organized and presented by a network of international groups, all of them leaders in the field of virtual art, including the Caerleon Sims/Virtual Art Initiative, Cybernetic Art Research Project/Diablous, Museo del Metaverso/Uqbar, Pirats, the University of Massachusetts, and the University of Western Australia.

Voices Soar

Filed under: Events, Opportunities, WebLog — Stephen @ 11:08 am

If you haven’t had a chance to contribute your voice to the project we open simultaneously in six countries: Italy, France, Holland, Germany, Brazil, and the USA this April 7th. Students seem to be the most creative at this point and we have an overwhelming majority from the US with Australia a close second. Is your country represented? I made a new video showing a tease of what the visitors experience is withholding a few surprises for the opening. I contacted William Powhida about adding the project to his #class extravaganza. If your in NYC and went to the Whitney instead of this, shame on you. Here’s a chance to make your voice heard in new media art throughout the world.

Call for Art

Filed under: Events, WebLog — Peter Ferko @ 10:48 am

Call for artwork:

Artists Unite Creative Venues: Projection Show
June 25-27

When is a wall not a barrier?

Artists are invited to submit video or still images of work in any medium. The work will be projected onto a prominent building wall in northern Manhattan (the exact location in Washington Heights/Inwood will be announced once approval is finalized).

Please submit work that considers the concept of wall — barrier, community, container, environment, canvas, etc. — in ways that transcend the cynical. The exhibition aims to create an instance of inspiration and wonder, using scale, wit, abstraction, analogy, and inquiry. The exhibition will simultaneously be exhibited online and remain as an archived exhibition at www.artistsunite-ny.org

Washington Heights/Inwood is a diverse community with a prominent Latino population and many visual and performing artists. The exhibition will be viewed by the general public over three evenings and coincides with the Uptown Arts Stroll, a month-long celebration of the arts in Northern Manhattan.

The exhibition will be drawn from invitations by the curators and through submissions.

To submit work for consideration, join Artists Unite’s member network if you haven’t already (http://artistsunite.ning.com) and upload submissions according to directions below. IMPORTANT: in the tag field for each photo or video, enter the word “wall” (Work without this tag will not be seen as a submission). Then send an artist statement and resume to websubmissions@artistsunite-ny.org.

  • Photography or still images of other media: At the member network site, click on the tab Photos and then on the link “Add Photos.” Upload up to 6 images for consideration. Images should not exceed 2MB.
  • Video: At the member network site, click on the tab Video and follow the upload procedure. Videos should not exceed 50MB and should be no more than approximately 1 minute in length and without sound.

Deadline for submission is Friday June 12 at midnight. Selection notifications will be made in approximately 2 weeks.

Save the Date: Gallery Crawl March 27

Filed under: Events — Sky Pape @ 5:58 pm

Now that SoHo has again become “off the beaten path” unless you’re looking for designer fashions, furniture, food, or bathroom fixtures, I’ve decided to visit some of the ol’ ‘hood’s die-hard art holdouts for March’s gallery tour.

We’ll head to The Drawing Center, Ronald Feldman Gallery, Location One, and more.

Details about meeting time and place will be posted at Drawn Together in advance. The agenda’s loose, and all are welcome to crawl along with us for all or part of the rounds.

Singer/Songwriter’s Handbook Q. 43

If a singer/songwriter falls down in the middle of a set and no one is there to hear him, does he make a sound?

Yes.

An awful clankity clank sound with some feedback and then a resounding thud as he hits the floor.

It looks really funny.

Kay WalkingStick Drawing Retrospective

Filed under: Events — Sky Pape @ 3:38 pm

Kay WalkingStick will be having a retrospective works on paper exhibit at the Grossman Gallery of Lafayette College in Easton, PA, opening March 7th. The show will remain on view until April 25th. The artist will be giving a lecture on the development of her work at 4:00 pm at the Williams Center, also at Lafayette College, after which there will be a reception. [More information, PDF]

“The works in this exhibition were completed over a 20-year span and directly relate, often as value studies, to the paintings made at the same time.

When I look at these works, I see and remember different periods of my life, various states of mind. My mind. Drawing is the most direct medium; it is as immediate as dance, and often as vigorous. Each of these series of works represents one of four rather distinct decades of my life, expressed very directly in marks, like a journal. The earliest are representative of the minimalism of the New York art world, and my involvement in it. The colorful group of oilstick works from the 1980s reminds me of my travels in the Southwest; the dark charcoals of the late ’80s and early ’90s are of loss and redemption; and the final charcoal drawings are about my life in Rome and the possibility of refound love. These drawings are a chronological representation of my life.” —Kay WalkingStick

Review: ADAA The Art Show at Park Ave Armory 2/19-23

Filed under: Events, WebLog — Sky Pape @ 2:10 pm

On Thursday, I had a couple of hours to dash through The Art Show of ADAA member galleries at the Park Avenue Armory. Given the amount of work on view, you do have to keep up a fast pace to see it all in that amount of time.

The overall mood of the dealers was perceptibly and understandably somber, and the show had far less exciting work to offer than usual. Some galleries had a big sticker next to a piece stating “ADAA Dealer’s Choice.” At first, I didn’t know what this meant, but apparently it was code for “This piece is $10,000 or less! Get your bargains here!” They might as well have had a sign “Buy one, get one 1/2 price!” It was depressing, and if you were the artist who created the “Dealer’s Choice” piece, I bet you’d cringe to see that big, ugly sticker next to your work.

I missed encountering the wild and unknown tangential work of major artists, often sequestered in private collections forever, which had become the main thing I always looked forward to seeing. Nonetheless, there were still plenty of things that stood out, and as always, I wish I had more time to peruse!

Here’s a list and some pictures of highlights:

Ron Nagle at Rena Bransten Gallery. Nagle’s two diminutive sculptures on view were some of the most surprising and original work to catch my eye. A catalog from a recent show of his made me crave to see even more. The work has something of the comic sadness of Guston. Nagle’s idiosyncratic use of form and color make these engaging abstract sculptures both entirely human and entirely his own. [Above, "Scrunchabunch," copyright Ron Nagle, courtesy of Rena Bransten Gallery, San Francisco.] Also at Rena Bransten, a beautiful wire piece by Ruth Asawa. A rare treat to view work by this superb artist.

Above: An untitled slate sculpture from 1945 by Isamu Noguchi (for $1.2 million) at Martha Parrish & James Reinish. This booth also had a couple of outstanding Milton Avery landscapes, pure and simple.

One could watch the subtle movements of Julian Opie’s digital piece Maria Theresa with Red Shawl, 2008, above, at Barbara Krakow, for hours. It was interesting to overhear discussions about the problems the technology of this work presents in terms of preservation and conservation. It’s a concern for the artist, collectors, and museums alike. There were some other powerhouse works in this booth, notably Tara Donovan’s untitled (glass drawing) and a very dynamic series of wood block prints of spirals by grand dame Louise Bourgeois.

• Materials shall not include written or printed text.
• Materials shall not include messages that might reasonably be interpreted as an endorsement or advocacy of any political, religious, social or ethnic organization, cause, or belief nor contain logos or other symbols of same.
• The transit system is used by a diverse population, and accordingly, the materials shall be appropriate for viewing by persons of all ages and varying backgrounds.  They shall not include content or references which might be reasonably construed as being of a sexual or violent nature.
• Proposed art must lend itself to reproduction as a two-dimensional poster, no more than 29.5 inches wide by 45 inches long, printed on standard paper stock.
• Allow room for a seven-inch strip running across the bottom of the poster on which will appear the text, “New York City Transit Celebrates Washington Heights” and the MTA New York City Transit logo.

Life in a Blender at Joe’s Pub, June 8

Filed under: Events, WebLog — Sky Pape @ 8:27 am

Hello Shadowy Creatures of the Night,

As you know, on June 8th, Sunday, at 7:30 Life in a Blender will be playing
at Joe’s Pub in New York City with a contorted new horn section that recalls
the bugles of Appomatox. I consider them each brave warriors. The U.S. mint
should issue a coin with all their faces somewhere on it. So I suggest you rummage
around in your desk drawer for that Sharpie–give it a little sniff–go
ahead–and mark June 8th with a big X. Now pop a danish in the microwave, get that
cup of coffee, stand by the window and watch the children running…running
down the street….as if they had ants in their pants…but no it’s probably not
ants or at least not real ants…yes, it’s the school bell beckoning them to
another day of brain fertilization. You can almost see the the seeds of
intelligence taking root in the head of little Tubby Winkle as he tries so valiantly
to keep up with the other children. “Run, Tubby, Run!” you think to yourself
as you watch him, coffee cup in hand, robe left slightly ajar to let in the
gentle morning breeze. Ahh, thank god I live in suburban America where I’m free
to do and think and…oh yes…feel whatever it is I’m feeling without having
to pay a fine or suffer a scolding. That’s why my baby can wear this American
flag diaper and my husband can keep a collection of false Hitler moustaches
hidden in his underwear drawer. Freedom. I hear it ringing like the school bell
down the street. Or buzzing like my digital alarm clock in the morning,
waking me for the early shift. I hear it’s robotic voice calling Free-dom.
Free-dom. Get up and work now. I am in such a reverie. Ding-dong. It’s the door bell.
Who could it be? “Hello Ma’am, I’m the milkman. A wonderful morning, isn’t
it.? Beautiful morning for such a world full of hurt. Doncha think? Have you been
enjoying the milk I’ve been delivering to you for the last three months? You
have, have you? Well, let me ask you this then? Have you ever thought about
paying for that milk?” Of course, you have the money for his precious milk. Just
a minute. I’ll be right back. And off you go up the stairs, into the
bathroom, and harriedly scramble out the bathroom window. Into the backyard and
running….running…running. That milkman will never get catch you now. You’re
running to the arms of Life In a Blender. June 8th, Sunday, at 7:30. Our arms
await you.

If you really want to help, go to Joe’s Pub web site NOW and order tickets.

Laura Peterson at DNA

Filed under: Events, WebLog — Peter Ferko @ 3:00 pm

I’ve been working with choreographer Laura Peterson at my day gig for the past few months, and she’s the rare artist who is both good with people and good with art. Consequently, we all love her, and I’m going to shamelessly promote her here. Her new work Electrolux stems from a consideration of man’s affect on everything he touches. Peterson, Kate Harris, Christopher Hutchings and Kate Martel rock out in a landscape of carpet and construction material to songs by Led Zeppelin.

Peterson likes the connection between dance and visual art (her last piece was called I love Dan Flavin) and she arranged for visual artist Edie Nadelhaft, who is collaborating on Peterson’s next work to show paintings of cow snouts and flies in the adjacent gallery. For more info and a video interview with a preview of the dance, click here. Shows are next weekend. Don’t miss this one!
