Here and there: I've been in Sonoma County, CA for 6 months where burlap bags and plywood are plentiful on our Friday mornings. I'm planning to be in NY for May. I do not know how it will seem. I haven't been away for more than 2 weeks in 28 years. I walked into a Starbucks the other day wearing a cowboy hat; I asked my brother if it was legal. I associate Starbucks with NY where a cowboy hat would be pretttty pretentious. Here they blend right in with the backdrop.

My body seemed to be full of pain welling up from below or from the back of the spine. The drawings cast the pain out through the paper. In this sense they become antidotes and in some sense then are pharmakons. On a topologic level they function as pharmakon/ antidotes, performatively. On the level of topography, they are mappings of patches of exposed earth against a brittle shell of salt along the Simmler Ranch Road at Soda Lake, Carrizo Plain, California. Part of the project Carrizo-Parkfield Diaries.

In the 1945 classic of French cinema Les Enfants du Paradis the character Garance is a tough, magnificent, femme fatale. Implicated in a crime, she is interviewed by a police inspector whose first query is "What do you call yourself?" She replies, "I don't. I'm always here."

I just left a meeting that will affect whether I have a job. That's kind of all that's on my mind.

OMM - I'm just back from 4 months in California where my calendar was virtually empty save the occasional birthday. I'm never satisfied. In California I miss the excitement of New York and when I get back I just want some peace and quiet.

Unlike the last exhibit, I did not get a chance to make art at exactly the moment specified, but I started to think of the photos I had taken in
the days before and after that moment of connection with other artists. I considered the ideas in the photo I had taken of the shadows of tree branches against the symmetry of a building, or the frames I took of a semicircular window crack against the varying backdrops on the D train as I came across the Williamsburg Bridge from Brooklyn [a whole new experience for me], or the dark concepts of a smiling baby doll found sadistically entrapped in the railing of a hedge fence in the park, or the shadowy petals of the backs of pansies. Then I thought -- hey -- it is spring -- it is OK to record and celebrate something which is just beautiful. It feels like we have waited so long.
