I have always had such complex feelings about the original
version of this image. My grandfather was assassinated in the presence
of his family when my father was nine. My father is the smaller boy to
the right of the coffin. My uncle is the taller boy opposite him. I have
insinuated myself into the lower left corner of the photo. This mountain
village in central Mexico has changed very little since then. When I visit,
it is like going back in time – I can easily imagine my father on
the steps of the church, or riding his horse over the cobblestones.

"April Is The Cruelest Month"
Indeed, it is hard to match what is inside with the outside
being pink trees and tulips at their peak. I whimpered approaching the
tulips at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens in face of their optimistic,
intense beauty. I was humbled. The reds seemed surreally illuminated,
truly glowing. Photographing them does not hit the spot, they are turned
into a cliché; you have to be with them. But wanting to capture
something, I turned to my out-of-focus guru, Peter Ferko, who showed me
this photo snapping trick-of-the-wrist. Anyway, I long for a back door
leading to a patch of earth to plant, flowers near-by to lead the way.

What a Woman Wants
Image One : Warhol for Girls
To admire her lover’s body shamelessly, even coloring
it with pretty colors and making lots and lots of copies of it. To play
and have fun. Show it to her friends. Is the blurred, "suggested,"
or “tinkered with” image more desirable because genitals and
sexuality are a gateway to the experience of love, which is a soulful
experience; because it is human nature to want to be "enchanted",
captivated, enthralled, and that the element of mystery needs to be present
for the experience of "awe" to be had? I would like to think
so, but I suspect it is
more likely because of shame.
I have been very restless about this project. Mostly because I am a Nice
Girl. I tried to think of all different ways of camouflaging his “you
know what.” I even thought of painting it sky blue with clouds and
birds flying across it. Came up with alternate ideas, more “nice”
subject matter, but keep coming back to this, because, after all, it is
what is on my mind. Any other image today would be less than sincere.
That said, I don’t intend to offend anyone.
Because there is more to what I want ….

The deadline for this project surprised me, but fortunately
I took a lot of pictures this week. I was shooting more than usual,
because my job has been all layoffs, bad management and stress lately,
and I was taking advantage of any opportunity to get my head out of the
muck. Sorting through the images, I was looking for pictures that
described how I felt, exhausted while the fight rages on, but I kept on
going back to pictures about spring, pictures that were about how I wanted
to feel. I realized I’ve been enjoying spring. I got down
to two choices, one of two guys fighting, another of a flowering tree.
I couldn’t choose so here they are. |
