Horizons
Last night a friend told me she usually finds horizons in
her abstract paintings as does a friend of hers in her photographs. I
thought, Of course, where have I been? They're everywhere, inner and outer,
but it's nice to focus on them. The photo of my bed I took earlier today,
before I put 2+2 together, not thinking of horizons, and as you can, see
it = 1.

One Is for Killing, One Is For Fun
I have had pieces of this piece standing around for years. The title
is a
fragment from a "tune" soldiers sang during the Vietnam War:
"This is my
penis, this is my gun, one is for killing, one is for fun..." I was
recently told me that it was not specific to Vietnam, but part of an army
drill to teach soldiers the importance of their rifle. I have over the
years collected many little maps printed in the New York Times that go
along with the stories on the various warring areas in the world. Many
little areas, many little maps...all the different places and all the
different ways we kill, maim, blame and hate each other. I keep trying
to paste them on the frame of this piece, inside, outside: an object lesson.
But it never seems to work, interfering visually from the simplicity of
who we are when we give voice to the worst in ourselves. I like the wood
against the metal. Maybe later, I may decide it needs the documentation. |

Every time I leave town I leave my dog and she's getting
nervous. She's starting to act manic. / i met an artist yesterday, 90
years old still exhibiting, he met a friend at our exhibit who chaired
a committee he belonged to. Artists Against the Atom Bomb My thinking
has been that artists need to illuminate the good when things look bad.
This guy was subpoenaed during the Mcarthy hearings but considered a mild
risk being that visual art has a limited range compared to movies and
theater. Do I need to say more with my art? i have opinions. I read in
the Utne reader about street artists making political statements. I wonder
how artists in NYC could react to the convention.

Nation Building
Today - sitting with my eleven year old daughter on the
floor of the lobby of Loews movie theater. To kill time we played a game
- What would you do if you could be invisible for a day? One of the things
she came up with was that she would find Osama Bin Laden, and speaking
as the voice of the God, command him to turn himself in. I wonder if that
would work with George Bush?
My daughter just read the above paragraph and thinks it
makes her sound cheesy. She would like people to know that what she actually
said was that, since she wouldn't have it in her to strangle him, she
would take on the voice of the Supreme Being and command Osama Bin Laden
to turn himself in. |

What a Woman Wants
Image Six: Have a Seat
To be alone, at times of my own choosing. To contemplate
the dust motes suspended on the sunbeam. Gaze out the window ever so quietly.
Let all the energy settle, just so. Let my eyes pussyfoot in and out of
the shadows, and then into the light, and then back into the softness
of shadow. To sit still in the soft burn of my self. |

Concepts and beliefs are like dead weights that must be cut free in order
to envision far greater possibilities.

In the past month, I feel defined by work, which is not
my favorite mode. I feel a bit numb and probably the opposite of the high
a workaholic gets. Luckily work comes in waves and so the trough must
be ahead. Until then, I'll be spending a lot of time reflecting on/in
this screen. |
