Welcome:Bienvenidos
This exhibit is an "art spark" generated by a community of artists living around the world. Every week, we meet at this virtual studio/gallery to share work and the most important thing on our minds.

Artists are invited to join Virtual:Comunidad.

I've been thinking about the relationship between having an intention and having a goal.  Also about the difference between surrendering and giving up.

Intention: Goal
Surrender: Give Up

I have no conclusions, just abstract thoughts and resonances.  It seems to me that when one sets an intention and decides to surrender to to the process, one is assured of reaching a goal, whereas if one sets a goal, one might be at risk of giving up when the process doesn't seem to be leading to the goal.

revolutionary art

The September issue of Art Forum includes a section entitled "The Art of Politics" that opens with a quote from Richard Serra from 1970. In response to the question, "What is the most revolutionary thing to do?" Serra wondered "whether the times were not forcing us to a completely new set of ideas about what an artist was and what an artist did."

The author continues, "'Revolution' today sounds anachronistic, something almost never heard in any conversations about art or culture, no matter how "engaged" the participants. Indeed, the word is nearly less provocative for its meaning than for its air of unreality and naivete."

I decided to respond with this collage:
-Poster in Union Square Publicizing a Sept. 11 Rememberance Event
-Virtual:Comunidad Web Site
-Police Presence at Union Square morning of Sept. 10, 2004
-Cover of Art Forum, September 2004
-One of 1000 placards on Union Square from the "Honor the Fallen Memorial," Sept. 10, 2004, by Nicholas Benjamin Cohen, U.S. Army Veteran
-Subway at Union Square

I read in the New York Times recently that the number of C.E.O.'s who have contributed to the Bush campaign is five times the number donating to Kerry's. Of librarians who have donated to one of the two presidential campaigns the ratio is 223 to 1 in favor of Kerry.

Different Sides

When in Fire Island for the tail-end of hurricane Frances, I walked through many towns and wildlife preserves. Between Ocean Bay Park and Point O Woods there was a tall impenetrable chain link fence. Ocean Bay Park had people bursting at the seam playing softball and drinking buds. Point O Woods had few people visible, playing tennis and drinking diet coke. I don't think the birds noticed.

hope

The most important thing on my mind is hope, right out of pandora's box.
