'At First Glance' series:
Odd Job, Union Square

I have been enamored of architecture for the past decade, and more and more, it's finding its way into my photography. I've always approached photography as more of a painting tool than as a form of documentation. But with buildings, I've usually gone for a perspective or detail that moves me toward the magic of making images.

I realized this morning when I caught sight of this Union Square building that I haven't shot enough buildings using my "At First Glance" blurs. Perhaps I'm usually too in awe of the architects. But this building inspired me to tamper--I like the shapes, and who wouldn't like the color!

I am pondering what I look like on the inside--that mysterious inner cavity. Here's this week's possibility. No telling what will come next.

Q: What did the Buddhist say to the Hotdog Vendor?

A: Make me One with Everything.

This weekend I attended a picnic given by mental health patients and their family members. My daughter wasn’t sure she wanted to go. She was worried about “the kind of people” she might meet there. After some discussion about opening one’s mind to people who have had “different” or “unique” life circumstances, we decided to go with the entire family in tow.

I must say it was a refreshing and enjoyable experience. We found ourselves replete with sand art, beading, an all you can eat barbecue, and pleasant, unassuming company. There were even a number of children and two dogs running around, which made it fun for my three. If there was that very occasional feeling that the person you were having a conversation with was pouring out all of her energy to stay focused, (as evidenced by a slight trembling, or an especially wide eyed stare now and then) why, it was taken in stride. We all have our coping mechanisms. I am sure that my daughter was not the only one who ventured beyond her comfort zone to attend the event.
I am glad we were there.

Blind Puppeteer - The God Card

Listening to National Public Radio I recently heard the story of a fascinating tiny parasite. As an egg it gets eaten by a snail, only to be regurgitated all covered with snail goo. The snail goo makes the egg an irresistible morsel to passing ants. Something about ingesting the goo covered egg causes the ant to behave in a very strange manner for an ant. The ant climbs to the top of a blade of grass and waits there until a sheep comes along and eats the blade of grass with the ant, and of course the parasite's egg within the ant. In this way the parasite reaches its intended host, and comes to reside in the sheep's stomach, where I presume it hatches and lives happily ever after.

Friday's presidential debate left me frustrated. I was hoping to see one of George Bush's famous deer-in-the-headlights looks. It didn't happen. I would like to recommend a terrific political blog at www.talkingpointsmemo.com.

Thank You MICHAEL MOORE

I'm starting to really like the guy. Loved his free underwear and noodles campaign to get slackers to register in Michigan. I hope he's doing well.
